The Play's The Thing!

I consider myself very honored to of been commissioned by Jacksonville State University's Drama Department to design the poster for their Fall production of "The Curious Savage". The show is a lighthearted American comedy from the 1950's which tells the story of  Mrs. Ethel P. Savage, a wealthy widow wrongly committed to a mental institution by her stepchildren as they attempt to gain control of her fortune.

While researching other posters done for this particular show I kept noticing a recurring theme in my results. The posters I found all used a very similar concept, which is normal and in most cases fine, but what irked me most about all these posters is the designs all gave away one of the big plot points of the show! After talking with Director Michael Boynton and Producer Randy Blades we decided we wanted the audience to go into the show fresh with no spoilers or preconceived ideas in mind.

The end result is what you see at the top of the page, what I pitched as an 'eclectic still-life'. It is made up of objects that both define and represent Mrs. Savage and her five fellow inmates.

La Belle et la BĂȘte

Inspired by the 1946 Black & White film by Jean Cocteau. Done with Pen & Ink, the goal was to use mostly vertical pen strokes to imitate deteriorated celluloid and film grain.

Dri'-Fa and her Prince Spin Head

One of my favorite pieces, a colored pencil drawing based on an old Dutch fairy tale. The young girl Dri'-Fa is rendered from a photograph of a model and then changed to suit the needs of the illustration. 2011
